A new area high school fishing team will compete in the Minnesota State Junior BASS Tournament this weekend in Grand Rapids as the young anglers exceeded expectations in the programs inaugural year. This summer was the first year for eleven area students who make up the Lake Crystal Area Bass Bashers, members of the Minnesota Junior BASS Nation along with 71 other high school teams across the state. Area School Districts still struggling with gap in funding to provide special education

Officials say the special education funding system in Minnesota is not keeping pace with rising cost to provide mandated services, resulting in major gaps in revenue and expenditures for many local districts. Special Education doesn't come cheaply, which is why the federal government in the 1970's mandated that 40-percent of the additional cost be funded, but it has never lived up to that threshold. Waseca and St. Clair receive funding from MnDOT for planning safe routes to school

MnDOT has awarded 225-thousand dollars in Safe Routs to School grants and two area communities have receiving a portion of the funding for planning assistance. Sam Parker with Region Nine. The City of Waseca and the St. Clair School District were awarded grants on Tuesday. MnDOT received applications from more than 63 schools in the state and handed out 12 grants.
