“It’s a challenging time for both landlords and operators to come up with a fair and equitable agreement, ” said Thiesse.

Thiesse says communication is key so that all parties involved feel they’re being treated fairly.

“I encourage an agreement in which the farmer can cover their base and make a little profit and add a flexible option so if yields or profits improve, both the producer and the landlord can benefit,” said Thiesse.

Thiesse says the dynamic of rental negotiations is changing as well since many landowners live in different areas than their property.
