Nine Minnesota-born hockey players will be among the 20 athletes from the North Star state competing in the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Will Borgen, a junior defenseman for the St. Cloud State Huskies, is one of three current college players who will make the trip and he said, “I’m super excited for the experience and it should be a lot of fun to go over there.”

He added that the make up of the men’s team will feature a wide age range of players and, “It’ll be nerve-wracking, but I mean I never expected going to the olympics but it’ll be cool going over there and play with some of those NHL veterans and stuff so, yeah, it’ll be a lot of fun.”

Two current UMD Bulldogs, Kelly Pannek and Maddie Rooney, will also be members of the US Women’s hockey team.

Women’s hockey competition begins Saturday, while men’s hockey will begin Wednesday, February 14th.

Team USA will also feature seven curlers, four skiers and one biathlete with Minnesota roots.
