A welfare check by Blue Earth County Sheriff’s deputies turned into a high-speed chase from St. Claire to Highway 14 near Waseca and a sent a man to the hospital in serious but stable condition.
Captain Paul Barta says friends called 911 Sunday night at about 7:30, saying that 36-year-old Rick Lund of St. Clair had made statements that caused them to be concerned for his wellbeing. The caller told dispatchers that he was driving a white Dodge Durango, and deputies found him sitting in the SUV in St. Clair.
When officers approached, Barta says Lund drove around one squad, ran into a second squad, and then drove through a yard to get away.
Blue Earth County Deputies and Eagle Lake Police pursued Lund out of St. Clair on Blue Earth County Road 15 and into Waseca County on County Road 2. The pursuit continued eastbound on Highway 14 towards Waseca where the Durango drove over spike strips deployed by Waseca Police.
About two miles east of Waseca, and in what Barta says was an apparent intentional act, the SUV swerved into the median and hit a maintenance turnaround causing the vehicle to vault into the air.
Deputies removed Lund from the SUV as it began to catch fire and provided first aid at the scene. Barta says Lund was airlifted from the scene and remains in serious, but stable condition.
