Two major polls this week show a tight race for U-S Senate between Democratic incumbent Tina Smith and Republican challenger Jason Lewis — and one of those polls puts that contest in a virtual dead heat, with Smith apparently losing support among suburban voters and women.   Carleton College analyst Steven Schier suspects Lewis’s previous career in talk radio is not weighing as heavily as in earlier campaigns:

“I think that a lot of those comments he made some years ago about women probably don’t have the staying power in 2020 that they did in earlier elections.”

Schier indicates it also benefits Lewis that, while in the U-S House he represented the Second Congressional District, part of which is the southeast Twin Cities suburbs.
